Inauguration of IBA |
IBA began its existence in 1986 as a spin-off of the Cyclotron Research Center of the Catholic University of Louvain-la-Neuve (UCL) in Belgium, which produced its first cyclotron in 1947.
The objective was to exploit a unique expertise in particle accelerator technology to meet growing needs in the fields of medicine and industry. While initially active in medical imaging, IBA quickly recognized the need to diversify.
So, the company turned its attention to radiotherapy and developed cyclotrons able to treat numerous forms of cancer with a degree of precision and efficacy not possible before.
Then, in 1992, IBA expanded activities into the industrial sector of Sterilization & Ionization by introducing the Rhodotron®, a new type of particle accelerator based on a patented concept of the French Atomic Energy Commission.
Funds raised on the Brussels stock market from an initial public offering in June 1998 enabled IBA to accelerate progress by internal growth and the acquisition of other companies, all offering technologies and services reinforcing or complementing IBA's core competencies.
Acquisition of Radiation Dynamics Inc |
In February 1999, Ion Beam Applications has realized the acquisition of Radiation Dynamics Inc, a wholly owned subsidiary of Sumitomo Heavy Industries specialised in electron-beam accelerators. RDI was well-established in the field of high power low energy e-beam accelerators used for heat shrinking and polymer modification applications in the wire, cable, tubing, tire, film and foam industries. The company, with sales of 10 M$ was located in New York, was profitable and employed around 50 people.
This acquisition reinforced IBA prominent position in the electron field as the RDI product line complements nicely IBA's high energy, high power Rhodotrons®. It has comforted IBA's position as the undisputed leader in all applications for electron beam including sterilisation for medical devices and food, crosslinking and depollution.
Adding a very large installed base (more than 200 units) essentially in the US, RDI has also served as a stronghold for the development of IBA accelerator business in North America.
RDI employees form a strong team of accelerator specialists, a rare and valuable resource in the industry. They have been able to market and service the full line of IBA accelerators in North America, including its medical cyclotrons.
RDI now becomes IBA Industrial Incorporated.
Establishment of IBA China |
In June 2007, IBA opened a new facility in Beijing, China. The facility is made of a factory and of offices that serve as the IBA's Headquarters for all Business Units in Asia. The opening of this new facility, located in the suburb of Beijing, is part of an overall development program to optimize the market opportunities in one of the fastest growing markets. The facility is now the IBA's homebase for the development of its different business units in Asia.
IBA Industrial |
IBA is the world's leader in the design and manufacture of particle accelerators for medicine and
Industry.
IBA's electron beam particle accelerators account for approximately 80% of the installed power worldwide.
IBA's Industrial X-ray systems are the largest development opportunity for the Industry in the next decades.
