Approximately 50% of all single use medical devices manufactured in the world today are sterilized with ionizing energy from either photon or electron sources. E-beam, a proven technology that was introduced over 50 years ago, is routinely used to sterilize very large quantities of disposable medical devices at very low cost.
E-beam uses ionizing energy in the form of accelerated electrons. In ionization, atomic electrons are removed from molecules (thus damaging the DNA). Such ionization is lethal to all forms of life when a sufficient dose is absorbed. 25 kGy is a typical sterilization dose.
IBA E-beam systems deliver sterilization doses in just a few seconds. As a result, the entire sterilization process typically takes minutes or hours rather that several days or weeks usually required by other technologies. The high throughput rates of IBA E-beam equipment can reduce in-process stocks and are well-suited to a just in time supply process.
IBA’s E-beam technology does not leave chemical residues in the products being sterilized. Our sterilization sources are electric-powered and therefore do not entail the handling, licensing, shipping, disposal or use of radioisotopes.
Many of the next generations of medical devices demand specific treatment options that no other sterilization method can offer. These include tighter dose uniformities and ultra-low temperature or modified atmospheric environments to mitigate the effects of irradiation on materials or medicines.
IBA is the leading producer of electron beam sources (E-beam) for medical device sterilization and the only producer of large scale machine generated photon sources (X-rays). With systems installed on six continents, IBA equipment has been used by the largest medical device manufacturers to sterilize products.
