ACCURATE TREATMENT OF COMPLEX TUMORS

Proteus®ONE delivers the proton beam to the isocenter using a Pencil Beam Scanning (PBS) modality. This enables the possibility of Intensity Modulated Proton Therapy (IMPT), which in combination with the appropriate imaging devices and treatment strategies, enables treatment of even the most challenging tumors.

The use of PBS comes to its full strength with the on-board Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) imaging modality, supported by adaPT Insight, part of the adaPT Treatment Suite, IBA’s integrated proton therapy software suite. 3D imaging accuracy at the isocenter provides a better view on the position and shape of the tumor. Consequently, a better treatment strategy can be developed for more complex carcinomas, such as advanced prostate and head and neck tumors.

The modular architecture and workflow-based approach of IBA’s adaPT Treatment Suite builds a solid foundation for the development of future specific image-guided proton therapy solutions. Dr. Lane R. Rosen, MD, Director of Radiation Oncology at WKCC, says WKCC wanted to take advantage of the advances in image guidance when it decided to go for the Proteus®ONE PT solution. “It will allow us to reach high levels of conformality and dose uniformity more accurately. The patient will receive the smallest possible neutron dose during treatment. From an ALARA dose management perspective (As Low As Reasonably Achievable, note of the editor), proton therapy can evolve from an equivalent option to a preferred option for the treatment of pancreatic cancers, left side breast cancers, cervical cancers, complex head and neck cancers, besides the already well-accepted indications of brain tumors and prostate tumors.”
