A 220-ton cyclotron completed its journey from Belgium to the Dallas Center for Proton Therapy last week. Located at 1501 W. Royal Lane in Irving, the center is scheduled to open in early 2016. It will take at least a year to calibrate the circular machine that will create protons traveling at super speed through a beamline with pinpoint accuracy to a patient’s tumor.
According to center director Gary Barlow, the new cyclotron is the only second-generation proton therapy technology in Texas. Physical construction of the center is about 80% complete. It will provide treatment for cancers in sensitive areas and for pediatric cancers. The treatment’s accuracy will minimize side effects. To learn more, visit the website of texascenterforprotontherapy
