The University Proton Therapy Dresden (UPTD) facility, part of the Center for Radiation Research in Oncology (OncoRay), at the University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus in Dresden, Germany, treated its first patient on Friday 12 December 2014, 11 a.m. The patient, who suffers from a brain tumor, received his first fraction in Double Scattering (DS) mode with two fields and 2 Gy/min.

This first patient treatment makes UPTD the third operational proton therapy center in Germany and the first in East Germany. The contract with IBA for the supply and installation of the proton therapy facility, including a long-term maintenance contract, was signed in January 2010, following a European public tender. The new facility includes a gantry-equipped treatment room and a research room, and represents the first IBA facility to feature in-room CT-on-rails.

For the first several months of operation, priority will be given to brain, base of skull, abdomen, pelvic and pediatric tumors and retreatment. The purpose is to build up gradually towards the full capacity of 400 to 500 patients per year. If this proves to be insufficient in the long term, there is an option to extend the center with an extra treatment room.

OncoRay is a leading research center, and conducts advanced research in particle physics and radiation therapy. It is developing laser beam technology that may be used for future development of proton therapy. In this initial stage, all patients must agree to have their treatment data incorporated into a medical observational study in a collaboration with the University Hospital of Heidelberg and worldwide research centers. Patients will also have the treatment costs reimbursed thanks to an agreement with health insurance company AOK PLUS.
