Pencil Beam Scanning further improves proton therapy clinical efficiency
Earlier this year, IBA teams successfully installed Pencil Beam Scanning (PBS) at four Proton Therapy centers.
Those centers were: the Francis H. Burr Proton Therapy Center at Massachusetts General Hospital in, Boston, Massachusetts; the Roberts Proton Therapy Center, part of the University of Pennsylvania Health System in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the CDH Proton Center, a ProCure Center in suburban Chicago, Illinois and Proton Therapy Center Czech in Prague.
With PBS, the proton beam is precisely directed across the target volume, pixel by pixel, layer by layer, to precisely paint the tumor shape. Pencil Beam Scanning offers outstanding dose conformity and uniformity. It fully leverages the precision of protons to avoid irradiating healthy tissues and critical organs.
Five more proton centers are currently commissioning PBS systems. By 2015, more than 20 centers will be treating patients using PBS.
